Restaurant Style Jeera Rice or Cumin Rice is a famous Indian rice dish that is commonly served in restaurants. The rice is cooked with cumin or jeera and other spices. This delicious, fluffy, non-sticky, flavorful rice is ready under 15 minutes.
This rice dish is a family favorite, and we enjoy it with dal, curry, or chicken sides. It is the most ordered dish in Indian restaurants and available in roadside dhabas as well as in restaurants. We enjoy traveling as a family, and I recall ordering a plate of jeera rice for our toddler daughter every time we ate out while traveling.
If you are looking for an easy and quick rice recipe, then you should try this jeera rice. It's excellent for your house parties, and you can pack it in a lunchbox too. When you're not in the mood for regular steamed rice, you may quickly prepare this tasty rice.
This Restaurant Style Jeera Rice is
- Easy to prepare
- Perfect to pair with dal or any curry
- Gluten-free
- Vegan (you can replace ghee with any vegetable oil)
- Ready under 15 minutes (using cooked rice)
Ingredients Required for Jeera Rice
Rice: The key ingredient of this recipe. You can use long grained basmati rice for jeera rice. However, I have noticed that many eateries in Southern India mostly serve this dish with short-grained rice. You will get this short-grained rice in practically every store as jeera rice or jeera samba rice. This rice is also known as kolam rice.
Cumin Seeds: Another important ingredient of this dish. As cumin seeds are also known as jeera in Hindi, the dish is named after this. Cumin offers many health advantages, including lowering blood cholesterol and promoting weight loss as well as protecting against food-borne infections.
Ghee & Oil: I use mix of ghee and vegetable oil for tempering cumin and fry the rice. If you are a vegan, you can skip ghee (clarified butter) and only use vegetable oil for tempering.
Others: Cashew nuts, cinnamon stick, bay leaf, star anise, coriander leaves, green chilli, salt, etc.
How to make Restaurant Style Jeera Rice
You can prepare jeera rice in two ways - 1) Restaurant Style Jeera Rice Recipe & 2) Home Style Jeera Rice Recipe. Here I will share step-by-step recipe of Restaurant Style Jeera Rice. I will also discuss the second method in short.
Step-by-Step Restaurant Style Jeera Rice
If you have pre-cooked rice, then Jeera Rice will be ready under 15 minutes. However, I will share the full recipe of jeera rice so that you can make it from scratch.
Take your preferred choice of rice in a bowl and wash it two-three times under running water. Then soak the rice for 20 minutes. Later drain the water and keep the rice aside.
Now boil water in a vessel and add the soaked rice and wait until 90% is cooked. Then drain the excess water and spread the cooked rice on a plate. Allow it to cool for a while.
Heat ghee in a pan and roast the cashew nuts. Once done keep them aside.
Next heat ghee and oil together in a pan. Add bay leaf, cinnamon stick and star anise into the oil. After that add cumin seeds and allow them to crackle. Once they turn slightly burnt, add green chillies.
Later add cooked rice and salt to taste. Combine well.
Finally, add fried cashew nuts and chopped coriander leaves and mix well thoroughly. At this stage if you want can add little more ghee and mix well. Now Restaurant Style Jeera Rice is ready to serve.
Home Style Jeera Rice Recipe
Clean and soak the rice for 20 minutes, and later drain the water. Now heat a large pan and add ghee. Fry cashew nuts and keep aside.
Next, heat the remaining ghee and oil mixture and add the cinnamon stick, bay leaf, and star anise to it. Add the jeera and wait for it to crackle and turn dark brown.
Finally, add the rice and green chilli to the pan and coat well with ghee. Add water as required. Onecup of rice usually requires two to two and a half cups of water. Add salt and fried cashew nuts at this time.
Cover it with a lid and wait till the rice cooks and bubbles arrive on the top, creating holes in the rice. At this point, the water in the pan should be dried up completely. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
You can also use pressure cooker, rice cooker or instant pot to prepare jeera rice.
