Kanda Poha

This Saturday was an auspicious day because two popular festival Eid and Ratha Yatra shared the same day. How was your weekend? Mine was really great. We went for a long drive and spent some quality time with family away from the busy city life. Really, enjoyed the drive towards countryside. Weather was great, monsoon has hit Bangalore again and will remain for one or two more weeks.
After a great weekend, you need to get ready for the coming week battle. Yes I call it battle :P. Sharing an easy, quick and healthy breakfast kanda poha to kick start your Monday.



Kanda Poha is a popular breakfast dish from the state Maharashtra. We Bengalis prepare chirer pulao, which is almost similar to Kanda Poha but it is sweeter version as Bengalis have real sweet tooth :). However, Kanda Poha is spicy and savoury version of flattened rice pulao. You need very simple ingredients and you can make it quickly without any hassle. This is a healthy and nutritious dish for breakfast.

Kanda Poha

Ingredients

Pressed rice (poha)/ Flattened Rice thick variety - 2 cups

Onions - chopped, 2 medium

Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon

Curry leaves - 3-4

Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon

Asafoetida - a pinch

Green chillies - chopped, 1 teaspoon

Salt to taste

Sugar- 1/2 teaspoon

Oil - 2 tablespoons

Lemon juice - 1 teaspoon


Fresh coriander - leaves chopped, 1 tablespoons (Optional)

Procedure

1, Wash the poha properly using a colander which will allow to drain the excess water. Poha should not be mashed but should remain moist.

2. Heat oil in a pan and add curry leaves, mustard seeds and asafoetida. When the mustard seeds starts spluttering add chopped onions and green chillies. Saute until the onions become translucent.

3. Now add turmeric powder, salt and sugar and mix them well.

4. Finally add poha and mix with the spices well. After few minutes add lemon juice and mix lightly.

5. Poha is ready, add coriander leaves and serve.
