Steamed fish in cumin flavour/ Bhapa Jeera Rui

Steaming gives a very different aroma to your dish and it's healthy too as I mentioned in my earlier post. I love to eat steamed food and these days I often prepare this type of dishes. And the best part is, you can call this as my kitchen secret too, i.e. steamed dishes are very tasty and save your time (:). So you get appreciation without much hassle. These steamed recipes help me a lot when I am busy to meet project timelines. 

 Last time I prepared paneer and this time it is steamed fish in cumin flavour. Recently, I saw this recipe in a lifestyle magazine and I have modified this according to my family's taste bud. I have used Rohu fish for this recipe but it goes very well if you try this with Hilsa/Ilish (Steamed Hilsa) or Mackrel/Bangra fish.

Steamed fish in cumin flavour/ Bhapa Jeera Rui


Fish - 4 pieces
Turmeric powder - 2 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Mustard Paste - 3 teaspoon
Jeera powder/paste- 3 teaspoon
Bay leaf
Green chilli paste - 1 teaspoon
Sugar - 1 teaspoon
Tomato ketchup - 1 teaspoon (optional)
Mustard oil - 2 table spoon


Marinate the fish pieces with salt and turmeric for half an hour. Now heat oil in a pan and fry the pieces just for 1 or 2 minutes. If you are using Hilsa, then no need of frying. Take bowl and add turmeric powder, mustard paste, jeera powder/paste, green chilli paste, tomato ketchup, salt, sugar and mix well with little water. Now take a tiffin box which fits inside your pressure cooker and place the 4 fried pieces in to it. Pour the spice mixture on the fishes and add a spoonful of mustard oil and bay leaf on top. You can also add fresh coriander and green chilli. Now close the lid of the tiffin box and allow it to float inside the pressure cooker. Adjust the water level inside the pressure cooker such a way that the tiffin box should float. Wait for 2-3 whistles  and do not force release the pressure. Slowly and carefully take out the tiffin box and serve Steamed fish in cumin flavour with plain rice.
